A major shake-up is underway at Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), with the departure of Clément Schwebig, the former head of Western Europe and Africa, to join RTL. This move has sparked a series of leadership changes within WBD's international operations, creating a ripple effect across the organization.
The Power Shift in Western Europe & Africa
In the wake of Schwebig's exit, WBD has realigned its international leadership structure. Christina Sulebakk, previously responsible for the Nordics, now takes on an expanded role, overseeing Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Alessandro Araimo, who already leads Italy and Iberia, will now also manage France. Meanwhile, Jamie Cooke's region, CEEMENAT, has been extended to include Africa.
But here's where it gets controversial: Schwebig's departure was initially planned for April, coinciding with the anticipated split of the Warner Bros. streaming and studios arm from the Discovery Global channels business. However, with Schwebig leaving at the start of next year, these leadership changes are happening several months ahead of schedule.
And this is the part most people miss: James Gibbons retains his role as responsible for APAC until the separation, indicating a potential delay or change in the planned split.
The Future of WBD International
The changes were outlined in a staff memo from WBD International President Gerhard Zeiler and Latin America and U.S. Hispanic boss Fernando Medin. Following the potential acquisition of David Zaslav's media giant, the future of WBD's split could be in question. If the acquisition goes through, Zeiler is set to become President of Discovery Global's US, UK & Germany, Discovery+, and Chief Content Officer, while Medin will take on the President, International role at Discovery Global.
In their memo, Zeiler and Medin expressed gratitude for the team's dedication during this transitional period, stating, "These changes reflect our commitment to strengthening our leadership team and driving our organization forward."
This news is just the latest in a series of reshuffles within WBD's international team, with numerous restructures since the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery in 2022. Schwebig's return to RTL, a Bertelsmann-owned media behemoth with a vast presence across Europe, adds another layer to this complex corporate narrative.
So, what do you think? Is this a strategic move by WBD to adapt to changing market dynamics, or is it a sign of instability? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
