A tragic plane crash in Florida has taken the lives of two selfless individuals, leaving a profound impact on the hurricane relief efforts in Jamaica. The story of Alexander Wurm and his daughter Serena is one of compassion and dedication, but it ends in heart-wrenching tragedy.
Alexander, a 53-year-old founder of Ignite the Fire, a Christian ministry based in the Cayman Islands, embarked on a mission to bring aid to Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. This devastating category 5 storm hit on October 28th, leaving a trail of destruction.
On Monday, Alexander and his 22-year-old daughter Serena were flying a twin-engined Beechcraft King Air, loaded with relief supplies, when tragedy struck. The plane crashed into a residential area in Coral Springs, just minutes after taking off from Fort Lauderdale's executive airport. Security footage captured the harrowing moment the plane plunged into a lake, narrowly missing nearby homes.
"We are in absolute shock and disbelief," said Sean Malone, director of Crisis Relief International (CRI), an aid agency that had been working closely with Alexander. "He sprang into action without hesitation, doing everything he could to help. He saved lives, and ultimately, gave his own for the people he cared about deeply."

"Alexander kept coming back, time and again, bringing supplies we couldn't find anywhere else. He landed here in Jamaica, and we would unload his plane, and he would give us these warm, heartfelt hugs and pray for us. He just delivered a whole range of essential items - medical supplies, water filters, even screws for roofs. He wanted to share his faith, to let us know about Jesus, and that was his motivation for helping others."
Serena Wurm, described as "a beacon of empathy and hope" by Ignite the Fire on their Facebook page, was following in her father's footsteps. She was deeply committed to humanitarian work, inspiring all around her.
"Alex leaves behind his loving wife, Candace, and their two other children, James, 17, and Christiana, 20," the statement added.
As of Tuesday, recovery operations at the crash site were ongoing, with crews working tirelessly overnight to locate and retrieve the wreckage of the 1976 King Air, which had a capacity of up to 12 people. According to FlightAware, a flight tracking website, the plane had been making regular trips between George Town, Cayman Islands (where the Wurms lived) and Montego Bay and Negril airports in Jamaica over the past week. It had landed in Fort Lauderdale just days before the tragic accident.
The bodies of Alexander and Serena, believed to be the only passengers on board, have not yet been recovered, officials said. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the cause of the crash.
