According to Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free-Press, the Tigers have set their sights on free agent starter Michael King, who has also attracted interest from the Cubs, Blue Jays, and Marlins. However, the latter two teams might not be serious contenders, as Toronto seems content with their recent acquisition of Cody Ponce, and Miami has other areas to bolster.
But here's the catch: King is coming off an injury-plagued season. A nerve issue in his throwing shoulder caused significant disruption, limiting him to just 15 starts. And when he returned in September, he looked far from his dominant self, giving up 10 runs with a less-than-impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio.
This recent injury history could make his free agency journey a bit bumpy. When healthy, King is a top-tier pitcher, evidenced by his seventh-place finish in the 2024 NL Cy Young balloting. In his first full season as a starter, he boasted a stellar 2.95 ERA across 173 2/3 innings. And this year, before the nerve injury, he was even better, posting a 2.59 ERA with an impressive 28% strikeout rate.
Interestingly, the Padres didn't seem too concerned about the injury, as they offered him a qualifying deal. But King declined, seeking a longer commitment. And with the Tigers in need of starting and relief pitching, they might just be the perfect fit.
Detroit's current rotation has some question marks. While Tarik Skubal is a solid #1, the #2 spot is up for grabs. Reese Olson could be an option, but he's coming off a shoulder injury. Jack Flaherty is back, but his performance has been inconsistent. Casey Mize is a reliable #3, but not quite a playoff #2. And with Jackson Jobe out until the second half due to Tommy John surgery, the Tigers need reinforcements.
Rookie Troy Melton could be a temporary solution, but the Tigers will likely need at least one or two more starters to ensure depth. And that's where Michael King might step in.
