NASCAR legend Tony Stewart was involved in a scary crash over the weekend while racing at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa.
Stewart was competing in the first round of the NHRA “Countdown to the Championship" on Sunday when Doug Kalitta’s car passed the center line and came over into Stewart’s lane, causing the crash.
Both racers had crossed the finish line prior to the wreck but were still traveling at high speeds.
Eventually, the two drivers were able to get out of their cars. You can watch video of the crash and the aftermath here.
Tony Stewart spoke after the crash following Sunday’s race and shared that he couldn’t remember what happened.
“I don’t have a [expletive] clue, honestly. I don’t remember any of it,” he said, according to reporter Kelly Crandall. “The first thing I remember, they’re waking me up here. Not sure what happened. It appears to be pretty massive. ... I’m as curious as everybody else is to what happened.
“I just know that we’re not where we’re supposed to be at the end of a run here. So, just confused. I got one hell of a headache and banged my left hand up. But I’ve been through sprint car crashes way worse than this, I’m pretty sure. We’re good. We’re good. We’re fine. I promise we’re fine.”
Tony Stewart provided a further update on how he is doing Monday afternoon and shared the he plans to return to racing this coming weekend.
“I just wanted to thank all of our fans, teammates, and most of all our racing family for checking on us yesterday. Wasn’t the day we had planned, but thankful to the @NHRA Safety Safari and Dr. Surface for making sure we did all the right things in that situation,“ Stewart said on X. ”It definitely could have been way worse. Everyone that climbs into a racecar knows it can happen at any moment, but it’s a great example of how we’re all human and how the entire racing community cares for each other.
“I’m sore today, but that’s to be expected. Can’t wait to get back to the track Friday and continue this amazing battle for a World Championship.”
It appears as though after a scary crash, Stewart is doing well overall and is ready to return to racing.
The 54-year-old Stewart won the NASCAR Cup Series Championship twice as a driver. He is a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and NASCAR Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
