In the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus, a unique residence defies conventional architecture, sparking intrigue and debate. AER, a suburban home designed by Kyriakos Miltiadou, stands as a bold statement in the midst of nature. But it's not your typical nature-embracing abode.
A Monolithic Cube Within a Cube:
Imagine a massive concrete cube, seemingly impenetrable, yet intricately carved with vertical cuts. This is AER, a residence that turns inward, shielding its inhabitants from the outside world. But here's where it gets fascinating: the cube is not alone. It houses another cube within, creating a mysterious, primal space. And this is the part most people miss—the design is not just about aesthetics; it's a philosophical exploration of the relationship between architecture and nature.
The Sculpted Interior:
Step inside, and the design philosophy unfolds. The interior is a complex interplay of voids and solids, with fragments of the natural landscape infiltrating the space. The vertical concrete walls, standing tall at six meters, become the guardians of this unique composition. They frame and reveal the surroundings, creating a dialectical relationship with the forest, city, and sky. But why such a dramatic design choice? Perhaps to challenge the notion of traditional residential architecture, or to offer a new perspective on privacy and connection with nature.
Blurring Boundaries:
AER's design blurs the lines between living spaces and the landscape. The house is organized across four levels, each connected to a network of outdoor spaces. The ground floor welcomes you with public areas, while the upper level reveals private rooms. But the boundaries are fluid, with intermediate spaces softening the transition between public and private. And as you ascend to the rooftop terrace, the concrete structure gives way to nature, with vegetation creating a microclimate and offering breathtaking views.

This residence is more than just a home; it's a statement on contemporary living. The use of concrete, often associated with urban landscapes, in a suburban setting challenges our expectations.
